The 1970s and the early 1980s saw the beginnings of what technology historians call the Fourth Generation of computing. This was the time when microprocessors were developed. IBM’s first computer for the home user and Apple’s first Macintosh were also introduced in this time. This was the era that fuelled the eventual rise of the internet, GUIs, mouse and handheld devices. Hailed as the crucial incubatory phase for the future of computing technology, this is the time when children and teenagers were inspired to join the technology revolution. One Indian, born during that age, who was inspired and rose to fame through his hard-work is Pichai Sundararajan.
Popularly known as Sundar Pichai, he was a resident of Chennai’s suburbs till his college education. An engineering graduate from IIT – Kharagpur and later a Masters graduate in Sciences from Stanford University, Pichai went on to pursue an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Though trained in metallurgy and business administration, Pichai has been known to show an unending interest in electronics.
Joining Google in 2004, Pichai worked on the Toolbar, Google Gears and Google Pack before the launch of Chrome, the browser. The success of Google Toolbar was instrumental in the development of Chrome. The Toolbar’s success kick-started Pichai’s career.
The rising popularity of the Chrome browser (2008 and onwards) led to the development of the Chrome OS (2009 and onwards). Being associated with these Google products, Pichai, who was the VP of product development in 2008, was promoted as the Senior VP of Chrome and apps by 2012. In 2013, he began overseeing the operations of Android.
As someone known to be responsible for smooth ties with other companies, Pichai was considered as one of the leading candidates for the top position at Microsoft before Satya Nadella was hired. Pichai was promoted in 2014 to oversee other products including search, advertising, maps and Google+.
Google announced recently that it would be subsumed within a new parent company called Alphabet. Pichai’s experience, hard-work and unique skillset have now made it possible for his promotion as the CEO of Google since earlier this month. This is truly great news and inspires the whole country of his origin to look up to him.
