King of??  Queen of??  If you think I am referring to the pack of cards, were king or queen are to be drawn from then think again. I am talking about monarchs. Monarchy a complex system of kings or crown holders (who are chosen by birth) ruling or governing over his subjects under a specific territory, still exist. If you are an Indian then this wouldn’t come as a shock to you neither for the Britishers. But for others it may come as a shock. In the era of people’s rule which can be in the form of democracy, federal, commonwealth or republic, it’s difficult to understand the ongoing system of monarchy. Monarchy over the years have been molded with the changing political phenomena  in the domestic and international fronts. Constitutional form of monarchy is the new & acceptable kind today. Constitutional monarchy is a system of government in which a monarch is guided by a constitution whereby his/her rights, duties, and responsibilities are spelled out in written law or by custom.  This is practiced by various nations from developed nations like Britain, Denmark, Canada, Japan, Sweden etc. to developing and underdeveloped nations such as Cambodia, Andorra, Bhutan, Jamaica, Jordan, Morocco etc. There are also nation’s which practice monarchies in its absolute form. Those are few or should say very few in numbers such as Vatican, Swaziland, Qatar, Oman, Saudi etc.

The Last Remaining Dynasties and the Kings of World

The democratic nation has often criticized the working of these nations framing them under merciless, autocrats etc.  But you can see them existing parallel in this complex political system.  Queen Elizabeth II has seems to enjoy the most. In her reign of 62 long years she has seen the world changing with every nuts and bolt. Which makes her the oldest monarch in the world.  Behind her, there is a series of kings and queens following her footsteps hand hoping to break her record:-

It is hard to imagine world without kings and queens. Their existence reminds us of the old times. So next time get a crown, whichever suits your pocket and be the king of your house (of course on the permission of your wife). And ladies don’t worry you are already the queen.
